Minnesota State Fair

I got all of these postcards from my trip to the Minnesota State Fair during the summer of 2019.

Krisit Abbott, a collage artist from St. Paul, created her interpretation (above) of the Great Minnesota Get-Together using intricately layered pieces of textured, colorful paper. This tapestry of visual storytelling contains more than 50 hidden images representing Abbott's visits to the State Fair. Her work is the 15th in a series of annual art created exclusively for the State Fair by Minnesota artists. This piece supports the mission of the Minnesota State Fair Foundation 501(c)(3) to preserve and improve State Fair buildings, the fairgrounds and educational programs. Visit msffoundation.org to purchase commemorative art merchandise.

Hell’s Kitchen

Hell’s Kitchen founders Mitch Omer and Steve Meyer have been renegade Twin Cities chefs far longer than their patient wives want to admit. Rather than being “celebrity chefs” with TV shows, these warhorses sold everything they owned to open their own place and just serve damn good food. To say it’s hotter than hell in the kitchen is an understantment. Up at 4am, our cooks labor over simmering pots, fire-breathing roasters, and hotter ‘n hell ovens while juggling a thousand other fun “tasks of ownership”. So Hell’s Kitchen is named a bit after the NYC neighborhood, but mostly for what it feels like behind the scenes while you enjoy your meal. And no, we were here years before Gordon Ramsey started that TV Show.

Way back in 2000, when the economy was significantly more robust, Hell’s Kitchen founders Cyn and Mitch flew to a fancy-ass gallery in Denver to see Mitch’s gonzo art icon Ralph Steadman, who rarely visits the USA. The couple vowed they would just look, not touch, and certainly not buy. Two days later, a large crate arrived with their first Ralph Steadman original, Big Head #5 (peeking out in this pic). “We’ve always valued art over money,” says Cyn, “but it took us 4 years to pay it off.” Ever since then, the underground lair at the Minneapolis restaurant has adorned its walls with Steadman’s wonderfully twisted works, and this is how the demented collection started.

Bubba Gumps Restuarant

The Bubba Gump Shrimp Co., the restaurant fashioned after the heartwarming film "Forrest Gump", opened at the nations largest retail and entertainment complex, Mall of America in August 2003. The restaurant combines great food in a casual family atmosphere just the way Forrest and his "best good friend" Bubba would have done it!

FlyOver America attraction at Mall of America

All of these postcards I obtained from the attraction FlyOver America at the Mall of America. Each postcard depicts places featured in the flyover of america in the attraction.

Mall of America

All of these postcards come from a postcard pack sold by Mall of America back in 1997. The mall has definitely changed since these postcards were made.

Possibly the most photographed sign in the world! Mall of America is your destination for family fun and entertainment. Visit one of the over 525 retail stores, enjoy a relaxing meal at one of 40 food establishments, take in a movie at the 14-screen theater, or take in a round of miniature gold at Golf Mountain.

It's easy to find fun at Mall of America-just head to the Rotunda, the 5,000 square-foot centerpiece where the action takes place. Mall of America is the largest fully enclosed retail and family entertainment complex in the United States. Visit over 525 stores, 40 food establishments, a 7-acre Theme Park, 14-screen theater, LEGO Imagination Center and the new Underwater World Aquarium.

Mall of America is big enough to hold 32 Boeing 747's and more than 20 of Rome's St. Peter's Basilica. Mall of America's Theme Park is a national wonderland that boasts 30,000 live plants, trees, waterfalls, lakes and brooks. Mall of America is the place for fun in your life!

Kids can build to their heart's content at LEGO Imagination Center with LEGO bricks and Duplo blocks in this one-of-a-kind showplace. When you've completed building your dream castle, relax and visit the 14-screen movie theater and take in a show!

Spend a pleasant afternoon in North Garden. A serpentine-shaped street winds its way through the inviting lush landscape. Many unique shops dot this avenue with an enormous food court and Golf Mountain miniature gold course anchoring its center.

The American flag flies proudly at the Rodney Putz Memorial Garden in honor of the man behind the vision of Mall of America.

North Garden- Gazebos, trellises and skylights with lush landscaping create a park-like setting. North Garden receives a seasonal landscape change 13 times a year.

West Market- Reminiscent of  a bustling European Marketplace, West Market's vendors display their wares from carts, offering one-of-a-kind gifts, souvenirs, and keepsakes. More traditional shops line West Market, but even here, you're in for a pleasant and unique surprise.

Glensheen

Glensheen was a mansion in Duluth.

Library: The library, favorite gathering place of the family, with custumed designed furnishings and fireplace of lustre tiles.

Main Hall: The main hall features fumed oak paneling, carved pilasters, plaster ceilings and beautiful brass light fixtures with Quezal Art Glass.

Breakfast Room: The breakfast room is of Green Rookwood Tile and with the oak leaf motif in the stained glass and throughout the room, it creates a natural retreat.

Glensheen features a formal Georgian style dining room. A fruit and flower motif is used for the damask wall covering and English silver fixtures. Dark mahogany furniture is used as an accent.

Living Room: The living room featuring mahogany panels, Algerian marble fireplace, goat's hair damask wall covering and furnishings designs for the room.

Aerial View: Glensheen, a 22 acre estate, was built along the shore of Lake Superior. Jacobean Revival architecture was used for the main residence. Also constructed were three support buildings: the stone boat house, and two Tudor style buildings-the Carriage House and Gardener's Cottage.

Master Suite: Like most of the other furniture at Glensheen, the American walnut bedroom suite was handcrafted by the William A. French Company of St. Paul, MN

London Road View: Looking down the west driveway, the main entrance of the Chester A. Congdon family home, built between 1905-08, is visible.
